A Study on the Prevalence and Subjective Impact of Exposure to Suicide in Social Relationships - Analysis of a Nationwide Online Survey Data on Suicide Survivors

Abstract
Despite the serious impact of exposure to suicide on suicide survivors, there has been little study on this specific topic. Especially in Korea where the suicide rate is high and where social relationships are regarded important, there is an urgent need to understand this topic. For this reason, analyzing data of the WAVE I of the first nationwide large size longitudinal study about suicide survivors in Korea, ¡®Trajectory Study on Mental Health of Suicide Survivors Who Were Exposed to Suicide in Social Relationships¡¯(N = 2,000), this study investigated the prevalence of exposure to suicide in social relationships, examined the characteristics of suicide survivors, and to investigate the suicide-related factors associated with life of suicide survivors. The result showed that participants experienced suicides of family members(4.0%), relatives(10.2%), friends/peers (12.4%), acquaintances(10.2%) in multiple response, a total of 29.3% of the participants experienced suicide in their social relationships. Those exposed to suicide is older in age, lower in education level, higher in depressive mood, compared to those not. Those who are more depressive, those who experienced suicide of family members or more intimate or more frequently contacted people seems to be more influenced by their experience of suicide. Based on these findings, practical and policy intervention for suicide survivors are suggested.
